March 2009

John has attended Curie Metropolitan High School. He will enter Roosevelt University in the fall 2009 as a Chicago Scholar in the Class of 2013.

As a first generation college bound senior, John is excitedly awaiting his fall semester at Roosevelt University. Following a meeting with a school representative at Scholarship Chicago’s Onsite Admissions, John felt certain that attending Roosevelt would enable him to learn more about his passion for writing and performance poetry. John had the opportunity to recite one of his piecies, "A Few Profound Words," at Scholarship Chicago's 2008 Gala. He encouraged his peers to lead a proactive life.  For John, leading a proactive life includes writing, playing an active role in many issues surrounding his community, and traveling to help rebuild New Orleans. As a member of Forefront, a program at Curie High School designed for empowered student leaders, John encourages others to make positive, meaningful decisions by being a role model for others.

A Few Profound Words

“Change is something you either do or you don’t

Change is something you either accept or revoke

To make an impact and leave your self made line

Together we do this for the sake of mankind

I WONT BE DECLINED

Because this is what I stand for, what I preach

I stretch above a bird's nest in order to reach

I jump from the back of the line in order to lead

Because to follow just goes so unseen

I guide in order to fulfill a goal that is quite promising

To rise to such a climax from below cruel poverty

To bring a better future for generations to come but it doesn’t end there

I’m taking life by storm and I will be prepared

Coincidentally, wicked road blocks and endless potholes are practically inevitable

How I handle this I believe has become quite rhetorical

To create ones own shining future takes more than just thought

Simply put, action is what brings us what we most sought

So it's either do as you feel or feel as you do

What happens next is all up to you. ”
